Use Your Business Email

Sunday 9 July 2017

When you're running a business it's important to make a good impression. If you want to appear professional you should be using your business's domain email, not a consumer webmail account. If you send email to your customers from kylie@kyliespetshop.com, it's going to look a lot more serious than using kyliespetshop@gmail.com.

All our website and hosting packages come with business email which is easy to integrate with your own systems. You can send and receive business email using either a desktop email client, a webmail account or an app on your smartphone. We also offer our own webmail interface if you want to keep business and pleasure separate.

And you don't have to have a website to take advantage of business email. We can also offer you business email if your website is hosted elsewhere.

Feel free to contact us if you want to find our more about business email from Brass Tacks Web Design.

Ongoing Website Management

Monday 26 June 2017

We were recently asked to make some changes to a Wordpress website, after the client had lost touch with the original developer.

We quickly found that the website was running an outdated version of Wordpress, with a theme that had not been updated for a number of years.

At Brass Tacks, when we design and deploy a website, we don't then walk away. We continue to monitor the site, take regular backups and ensure that all software is up to date. This service is provided as part of our web hosting package at no extra cost. Even if you've decided to host your website using your own provider, we're happy to keep an eye on things for you.

Adding Content Management

Tuesday 14 February 2017

We've recently completed a project retrofitting a content management system to a client's existing static website.

The client approached us with an existing website designed by a third party, asking if we could add a backend content management system that would allow them to add to their existing portfolio of case studies. They also wanted to add blog functionality so that they could post news to the site.

We designed a database and provided the client with our easy to use stock CMS. We migrated the existing case studies to the new database and provided a backend to allow maintenence of the case studies, including image galleries.

We also added our stock blogging system so that news could be added to the site.

The front end was then updated to work with the new database and client images.

Websites For Community Organisations

Friday 14 October 2016

Our portfolio features a significant number of community and arts organisations, such as local theatre companies, museums and music events. We've been working with local organisations for over a decade providing web and online services to the community.

As well as public facing websites for organisations or events, we can also provide password-protected members' areas that provide information and resources to members of an organisation or those resposnible for administering clubs, societies and other community organisations and events. We can also provide databasew designa and administration, including member lists, event listings, calendars  and document sharing functionality.

We can also proactively manage your social networking operations - Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, for instance.

Many community organisations and events work on a tight budget so we are able to offer and affordable alternative to larger web design studios.

If you're interested in funding out more about what Brass Tacks can offer you, why not get in contact for a chat about our services.

Running a Snitz Forum on PHP

Friday 12 August 2016

We recently ran up some code to allow an old Snitz Forum to be accessed on a PHP system.

The original forum ran on a Windows server using Active Server Pages (ASP) with a backend Microsoft Access database.

The forum was hosted by Discover Hertford Online, a community website, on a Windows server running ASP. The overall site was migrated to a LAMP server running PHP and the forum retired (although it was replaced with a new forum running on phpBB).

To allow the old Snitz forum to be accessed as a refreence, we migrated the basic forum tables from the Access database to MySQL and created a PHP front end to allow the posts to be viewed. There is no functionality to actively use the forum - the code merely being in place to view the old forum.

The layout is rudimentary and as such can be used with any Snitz forum that is no longer active.

Visit the link below so see the archived forum:

If you have an old Snitz forum that you'd like to make accessible in the same way, why not contact us. There is a small charge if you want to use the code but we're happy to include any basic data migration that might be necessary.

Website Curation

Tuesday 17 November 2015

Brass Tacks Web Design provide content management services for a number of our theatrical and music clients.

For a regular fee we update and maintain the content of their websites.

This can be useful for clients who are too busy or do not have the in-house skills to update the websites themselves.

We keep their websites and databases updated with news and information on events. For our theatrical clients this can include information on upcoming productions, auditions and galleries of production photos (we provide photogrfaphic services too!). We also run websites for music festivals and musicians and similarly provide updates for events and other content.

Information is either provided by the client as and when, or we can request content at regular intervals.

This service isn't limited to just our own websites. If you have a site that you're struggling to keep updated, we can help you out.

If you'd like to find out more about how we can help keep your website up to date, why not contact us.

Responsive Web Design

Wednesday 25 March 2015

Ever since the web was established in the early nineties it has been evolving, with new features, functionality and capabilities being added.

One of the most important developments of recent years has been Responsive Web Design. Websites that use responsive design adapt to the device they're being viewed on - be it a desktop computer, laptop, tablet or smartphone.

It's easy to forget that tablets have been with us barely five years and the widespread use of smartphones is also very recent. In this short period of time these devices have increasingly been used to visit websites. Many of these sites will have been designed and built to be viewed on desktop or laptop screen, in the days when very few mobile devices were being used to browse the web.

With responsive design, layouts adapt to varying screen sizes and text becomes readable on small screens. Links and menus can be sized such that they can be selected using a finger rather that a pointing device. Overall the experience on mobile devices is much improved.

We now design all our websites to be used on mobile and desktop devices. In addition we can modify your existing website to be mobile-friendly, either based on the existing design or a completely new look.

If you'd like to find out more about how we can help you with a mobile friendly website just contact us.

Lost Touch With Your Web Designer?

Wednesday 20 August 2014

A number of our clients have come to us after losing touch with their original web designer.

In cases such as ths we can often work with your existing web host or migrate your site to our own server.

We can take your existing site and update it to your requirements or provide an updated site, either based on your existing design or provide an entirely new design.

We can also add a content management system to your existing site so that you can update the content yourself.

So, if your site needs some love after being neglected or needs a refresh, why not get in touch for a friendly iscussion about your options and the costs involved. I might be a lot easier than you think.
